Tough Bond® – Contact Adhesive (Premium Grade)

Tough Bond Premium Grade is a superior quality, polychloroprene-based contact adhesive engineered for extreme conditions. Unlike standard contact glues, this premium formulation offers exceptional heat resistance and a higher solids content, creating a bond that is both tougher and more durable against aging.

The High-Heat, Heavy-Duty Adhesive for Demanding Applications.

Tough Bond Premium Grade is a superior quality, polychloroprene-based contact adhesive engineered for extreme conditions. Unlike standard contact glues, this premium formulation offers exceptional heat resistance and a higher solids content, creating a bond that is both tougher and more durable against aging.

It is the preferred choice for the automotive industry (headliners, door panels, carpeting) and specialized joinery (kitchen countertops, curved laminates). Tough Bond Premium resists the intense heat of the African sun inside vehicles without failing. It bonds aggressively to a wide variety of substrates including wood, metal, rigid plastics, leather, and foam, delivering a permanent bond that will not creep or lift over time.

Key Features:

  • High Heat Resistance: Withstands temperatures up to 95°C, preventing delamination in hot environments.

  • Superior Shear Strength: Holds tension on curved surfaces (post-forming) better than standard glues.

  • Automotive Grade: Ideal for vehicle upholstery and trim where heat buildup is common.

  • Moisture Resistant: Excellent durability in humid coastal climates.

1. Surface Preparation: Surfaces to be bonded must be clean, dry, and free from grease, oil, dust, or loose paint.

  • For Wood/Laminates: Ensure the moisture content of wood is below 15%. Sand smooth surfaces slightly to improve mechanical keying.

  • For Metal: Degrease using KAPL Industrial Thinner and abrade with sandpaper.

2. Application: Stir the adhesive well before use. Using a serrated spreader or a stiff brush, apply a uniform coat of Tough Bond Standard to both surfaces. Ensure the edges are well coated as these are stress points.

  • Note: Very porous surfaces (like soft chipboard) may require a second coat after the first has dried.

3. Drying Time (Flash Off): Allow the solvent to evaporate until the adhesive film is “touch dry.” This typically takes 10 to 20 minutes.

  • The Test: Touch the glue with your knuckle. If it feels sticky but does not transfer to your skin, it is ready to bond. Do not bond while wet.

4. Assembly: Align the substrates carefully. Once contact is made, repositioning is impossible. Press the two surfaces together firmly.

5. Applying Pressure: Apply firm pressure across the entire surface area.

  • Manual: Use a hand roller or a wooden block and hammer, working from the center outwards to eliminate air bubbles.

  • Mechanical: For best results, use a pinch roller or cold press.

6. Curing: While initial handling strength is immediate, the bond reaches full strength after 24 hours.
