Kenlac® Matt Varnish

Kenlac Matt Varnish is a premium quality, oil-based wood finish designed to protect timber while maintaining a natural, low-sheen appearance. Unlike traditional high-gloss varnishes that create a “plastic” shine, this formulation dries to a flat, non-reflective finish that enhances the texture and grain of the wood without the glare.

The Natural, Non-Reflective Finish for Modern Interiors.

It is the ideal choice for contemporary furniture, rustic joinery, and brightly lit rooms where light reflection needs to be minimized. Despite its soft appearance, it offers the same tough, durable protection as our Hard-Gloss range, creating a washable barrier against scratches, water spills, and household stains.

Key Features:

  • Natural “Flat” Finish: Virtually invisible sheen that makes wood look authentic and raw.

  • Anti-Glare: Perfect for tabletops and paneling in brightly lit rooms.

  • Durable Protection: Resistant to alcohol, hot water, and abrasion.

  • Washable: Creates a sealed surface that is easy to wipe clean.

1. The “Golden Rule” of Matt Varnish

  • Stir Well: The matting agents (silica) in this varnish are heavy and sink to the bottom of the tin. You must stir thoroughly with a flat paddle before and during use. If you don’t stir, the first brushstrokes will be glossy, and the last ones will be cloudy.

2. Surface Preparation

  • Ensure the wood is sanded smooth and free of dust, wax, or grease.

  • For raw wood, apply a first coat thinned 10% with Kenlac White Spirit to seal the fibers.

3. Application

  • Apply 2 to 3 coats using a quality brush.

  • Matt varnish sets quickly; avoid “over-brushing” or going back over semi-dry areas, as this can cause streaks.

4. The “Gloss-First” Trick (Pro Tip)

  • For darker woods (like Mahogany), some professionals apply 2 coats of Kenlac Hard-Gloss first (to build depth and clarity) and then apply only the final coat with Kenlac Matt. This gives deep protection without the surface glare.
